As tax season begins, here’s how to find a reputable preparer

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — If you’re looking for a tax professional this filing season, the Internal Revenue Service urges you to choose wisely.

Tax preparers vary widely in skill, education and experience.

The IRS provides an online database that allows you to search local tax preparers by level of professional credential, which ranges from certified public accountant to attorney and “enrolled agent.”

The agency also publishes spreadsheets by state listing everyone who holds a PTIN, or Prepared Tax Identification Number. Paid preparers cannot file returns without that designation.

But preparers can obtain a PTIN with zero credentials, education or experience. That’s why it’s critical that you do your homework before you hire. You can even search for disciplinary actions against tax preparers.

The Michigan Association of CPAs recommends that you start your search early and obtain references.

“I think anyone should be able to provide references,” said Bob Doyle, president and CEO of the Michigan Association of Certified Public Accountants. “(Through) their website if they have a reputable website or (you can ask) neighbors, friends. I think those are great resources.”

The MICPA suggests you ask preparers a list of specific questions, which are listed on the organization’s website.
