Ohio has earned itself some not-so-flattering national recognition.

SmartAsset released a study this week examining the places in the U.S. where household income has declined the most and cities with the lowest median household income. Ohio placed three communities in the bottom 10 of having the lowest median income.

Canton, Cleveland and Lorain were found to have some of the lowest median incomes of the 630 cities analyzed (populations over 65,000), with Cleveland ranking sixth, Canton seventh and Lorain ninth. Canton and Cleveland had median household incomes of less than $40,000 last year.

"Just as inflation can drive up costs, macroeconomic shifts, layoffs or industry downturns can lead to declines in household income, potentially posing challenges to families affording housing, groceries and other necessities," the study says.

In 2022, Canton's median household income was $40,711. In 2023, it dropped by about 2.5%, coming in at $39,692.

Nearly 9% of Canton households earned $100,000 or more in 2023, with 1.3% earning $200,000 or more.

  • Marysville, Washington: 17.93% decline

  • Champaign, Illinois: 17.66%

  • Madera, California: 17.54%

  • Baton Rouge, Louisiana: 17.20%

  • Union City, California: 16.22%
