Jul. 21—Two state departments this month plan to launch a program aimed at expanding outreach for unemployment benefits and re-employment services in tribal and rural communities across New Mexico through the help of community health workers. The New Mexico Department of Workforce Solutions, in conjunction with the state Department of Health, is launching the outreach program with the help of a $2.8 million federal grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor, according to a state news release. "Access and inclusion are critical to Governor Lujan Grisham's administration, and our Department is excited to partner with (the) Department of Health to continue our efforts to help all New Mexicans," NMDWS Secretary Sarita Nair said in a statement. NMDWS provided training to community health workers on the social safety net programs. The state says community health workers will work directly with NMDWS specialists who can help individuals with signing up for those services. The state said community health workers will also help "identify barriers that make unemployment and employment services difficult to understand or access."
