Stantec, a sustainable design and engineering company has secured a contract with the City of Toronto in Canada to provide Owner's Engineer/Technical Advisory Services for the F.G. Gardiner Expressway Rehabilitation Project Section 4.

The company will deliver multidisciplinary engineering consulting services, encompassing planning, procurement, and post-construction phases.

Stantec's involvement in the project comes on the heels of its early 2024 acquisition of Morrison Hershfield, which bolstered its transportation team in Ontario and enhanced its presence in the Greater Toronto Area.

The Gardiner Expressway, a vital artery for Canada with 140,000 vehicles daily, requires a multiyear rehabilitation to address the wear from age, usage, weather, and salt.

The complexity of the project is heightened by its location along established neighbourhoods and Toronto's downtown core.

Section 4 entails replacing 2.2km of elevated roadway from Grand Magazine Street to York Street, including 91 bridge spans and five on- and offramps.

The rehabilitation strategy will involve structural modifications, deck replacement, and substructure rehabilitation.

The contract for Section 4 is valued at C$24m ($18.9m).

Stantec's previous contributions to the City of Toronto's Gardiner Expressway Rehabilitation Plan include work on Section 2 and contract administration for Section 1, as well as preliminary design for Section 5.

In addition to the Gardiner Expressway, Stantec has been instrumental in delivering several major transportation projects throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

These include the Toronto Subway Program, the Ontario Line, the Hazel McCallion Line, the Waterfront East Light Rail Transit Extension, the Highway 401/409 Rail Tunnel, and the rehabilitation and reconstruction of 63 bridges in the city.

In September 2024, Island Health chose Stantec as the prime consultant for three new long-term care homes on Vancouver Island to improve care for older residents in the Canadian province of British Columbia.
