The construction of the St John's CE Academy secondary school in Grove, Oxfordshire, has been awarded to Bouygues UK, a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction.

The £28.2m ($36.9m) project has been chosen by the UK's Department for Education (DfE) on behalf of the Vale Academy Trust.

The new St John's CE Academy will be situated adjacent to the existing primary school in Grove, making it the first institution in the area to provide education from nursery through to secondary level for approximately 600 pupils.

The two-storey building, designed by Stride Treglown, will utilise sustainable materials, notably a cross-laminated timber frame, and feature a green roof with photovoltaic (PV) panels.

The school's construction will also prioritise environmental considerations, with the inclusion of sustainable drainage systems to manage rainwater effectively.

The aesthetic appeal of the building will be enhanced by a combination of brick and wood panels, and aluminium features for the entrances.

St John’s CE Academy executive headteacher Rick Holroyd said: "Our vision is for the new academy to become an educational centre at the heart of the Wellington Gate community, not only offering quality education, but also providing opportunities and services for the whole family.

"We are confident that Bouygues UK will deliver a modern building that will meet the needs of the community for many years to come.”

Bouygues UK has a track record in the construction of educational facilities across the country, including projects such as Pencoedtre High School and Cardiff Innovation Campus.

With a global workforce of 32,500, Bouygues Construction reported sales of €9.8bn in 2023.

This latest contract follows the recent appointment of Bouygues UK by the DfE as the lead contractor for Stanmore College in Harrow, England.
