Will Southwest Airlines layoffs impact service at San Diego airport?

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Southwest Airlines announced on Monday it plans to cut 15% of its corporate workforce, following on the heels of an announcement earlier this month about a new route offered out of San Diego International Airport (SAN).

The company stated it plans to lay off around 1,750 people in an effort to save $210 million in 2025 and $300 million in 2026.

How does fog affect flying in and out of San Diego?

Southwest Airlines is San Diego’s largest carrier for air travel in terms of volume of passengers and number of overall flights.

The news came just over a week after the airline announced a new route between SAN to Fresno Yosemite International Airport that begins in October.

The company said the layoffs will mainly impact senior leadership and directors. Separations are expected to begin in late April and most employees who are removed from their positions will not work but will continue to receive their salary, benefits and eligible bonuses, according to a statement from Southwest President and CEO Bob Jordan.

“This will be hard, and we will treat our People (employees) with the care and respect they have earned and they deserve,” he added.

For now, how the layoffs will impact service out of SAN remains to be seen. FOX 5/KUSI has reached out to SAN and Southwest Airlines for additional comment.
