Smuttynose Brewing expands portfolio with Five Boroughs Brewing Co.

Nov. 11—Hampton's Smuttynose Brewing Co. will further expand its reach into New York with the purchase of Five Boroughs Brewing Co. in Brooklyn.

Finestkind Brewing LLC, the owner of Smuttynose, says the purchase will allow the company to increase its presence in the tri-state area. Five Boroughs' production will transition to Finestkind Brewing's facility in Hampton over the next few months, according to a news release.

Smuttynose claims to be New Hampshire's original craft brewery and has been "setting beer trends since 1994," according to its website. One of its newest releases includes Wood Chop, a chocolate stout.

Company officials say the purchase will allow for growth into new beverage categories, including non-alcoholic options. Finestkind Brewing also owns the Island District Cocktails brand.

"We've closely monitored Five Boroughs from a distance for some time now," Steve Kierstead, CEO of Finestkind Brewing, said in a statement. "We admire their remarkable achievements in the competitive craft beer space."

Five Boroughs Brewing Co., established in 2017, will continue to operate a taproom in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, as an innovation hub for the brewery, supporting new projects, including small-batch beers for select accounts, according to the news release.

"It serves as a space for pushing craft beer boundaries while celebrating the community that has shaped the brand," Kevin O'Donnell, co-founder and COO of Five Boroughs Brewing Co., said in a statement.

Blake Tomnitz and Kian Oveissi are also founders of Five Boroughs.

"Smuttynose is a craft beer pioneer, and we share their commitment to high-quality craft beers. Under their leadership, we're confident in the brand's continued growth, reaching even more craft beer consumers across the tri-state area and beyond," Oveissi said in a statement.

Smuttynose was sold to Runnymede Investments, a venture capital and investment firm based in North Hampton, during a foreclosure auction in March 2018.
