Slovak PM: we don't see lead candidate system for Commission chief as obligatory

BRUSSELS, May 28 (Reuters) - Eastern EU countries believe the system of lead candidates for the chairmanship of the bloc's next executive does not have to be necessarily applied, Slovak Prime Minister Peter Pellegrini said on Tuesday.

"Slovakia, and also the V4 countries, we don't consider the system of Spitzenkandidaten as a Holy Bible for us," Pellegrini told reporters as he arrived for a meeting of EU leaders in Brussels.

He said he would like to see outgoing Commission Vice-Chairman Maros Sefcovic, a Slovak, taking over at the helm of the European Commission but that he was not an official candidate of the V4 group at the moment. (Reporting by Gabriela Baczynska, Jan Strupczewski, Writing by Jan Lopatka)
