A joint venture (JV) between Siemens Mobility, part of Siemens, and Costain, an infrastructure solutions provider, has been selected to deliver high-voltage (HV) power supply systems for the High Speed Two (HS2) railway, covering the 225km route from London to the West Midlands, England.
The JV will undertake design, manufacturing, installation, and maintenance of HV power supply systems between London and Birmingham.
The contract is valued at approximately £300m ($380.30m) and will feature optional contract extensions.
The JV will be part of the Rail Systems Alliance, collaborating with industry partners to bring the railway to fruition.
Post-completion of the design-and-build phase, a separate seven-year maintenance contract, valued at £32m, will commence.
The JV will combine expertise in project management, digital coordination, systems integration, equipment manufacturing, and supply chain collaboration.
Traction and non-traction substations will be constructed along the line to power stations, shafts, portals, depots, and railway systems between London and Birmingham.
Drawing on their history of successful projects such as the Elizabeth line and the East Coast Main Line Power Supply Upgrade, both Siemens Mobility and Costain will bring a wealth of experience to the HS2 project.
A significant aspect of HS2's sustainability goal is that the trains will be powered by zero-carbon energy sourced from the national grid, ensuring an environmentally friendly operation from the first day of service.
Costain chief executive officer Alex Vaughan said: “This new contract continues our longstanding involvement with the UK’s largest strategic investment programme and reflects our excellent collaborative relationship with HS2.
"It also marks the start of a new partnership with Siemens Mobility and its team of experts who share our values and ambitions.”
Earlier this month, Costain was awarded the contract to supply mechanical and electrical systems for the UK's HS2 rail tunnels and lineside areas.
"Siemens Mobility and Costain JV awarded HV power supply contract for HS2" was originally created and published by World Construction Network, a GlobalData owned brand.
