Shuttered plants get new owner

HIGH POINT — A south High Point manufacturer of foam materials that has been in expansion mode of late has again broadened its local presence.

Future Foam recently acquired two parcels that adjoin its 1300 Prospect St. campus for a combined $16.9 million.

Both include large industrial buildings that, until recently, were part of Leggett & Platt’s bedding components manufacturing operation.

The company is in the process of shutting down both facilities and laying off 158 of its employees.

Future Foam paid $10.9 million for 15.7 acres at 1629 Blandwood Drive, which was office and manufacturing space for Leggett & Platt.

Located directly behind Future Foam, it includes 216,000 square feet of building space.

The other acquisition was a warehouse across the street at 1640 Blandwood Drive that spans 131,000 square feet on 14.3 acres.

The purchase price for it was $6 million.

The sellers of both were corporate entities affiliated with Leggett & Platt.

The Carthage, Missouri-based company earlier this year announced a “restructuring” that involved downsizing its bedding products business.

Future Foam last year completed a 61,544-square-foot addition to its High Point plant, which makes foam materials used in furniture, bedding, flooring and other products.

Prior to that, in 2021, the company purchased 170 acres just south of Archdale for a potential expansion site, but nothing has been developed there.
