Sears closing after 72 years

May 20—HENDERSON — The Sears at 1535 Dabney Drive is closing effective June 27. Liquidation of merchandise began Friday.

"A lotta headwinds" caused the store to close, owner T.W. Floyd said.

Supply chain issues caused some appliances to take months to arrive, he added, and were one of two primary causes for closure, the other being lost market share.

Community support allowed the store to "withstand" issues caused by the pandemic and the supply chain for a long time, Floyd said.

"Whenever you close a store there is some sense of regret and sadness," the current owner said. "But things change and you have to change with them. ... It's time to let somebody else into the building. We'll be looking forward to it."

Floyd said that the Sears on Dabney had been in business since around 1950, a lifespan of 72 years. His father, Thomas Floyd, owned the store for 30 years before passing it to his son, who has owned it for 28.

Thomas Floyd gave an idea of what the store was like in the past: "In its heyday, it was busy, busy, busy," he said, saying at one point the store had 42 employees.
