New Seagate drive streams content to Chromecast, Apple TV and more
Let’s face it: Hard drives aren’t sexy. Seagate thinks it can spice things up though, launching its new Seagate Personal Cloud drives on Sunday. By adding wireless capabilities to the drives, you can stream content stored on the them to various screens around your home.
The Seagate Personal Cloud, available in 3TB, 4TB, and 5TB capacities, connects to a wireless router using an integrated Wi-Fi radio. Don’t worry, you can use these with traditional USB cables as well. Once the drive is on your network however, you can stream digital content from it to any supported device on your network using Seagate’s mobile application.
And the list of supported devices is quite long, including Google‘s Chromecast, Apple TV (via AirPlay), Roku, various smart TVs and BluRay players, iPhones, iPads, Android devices, Amazon Kindle tablets, and Windows computers in addition to DLNA devices such as the Sony PlayStation 3 and 4, as well as Microsoft‘s Xbox One and 360.
Seagate says the new Personal Cloud drives start at $169.99 for the 3 TB model which is available direct from the company’s online store and will be on retailer shelves later this month.
While there are no lack of hard-drives you can hang off your wireless router, most of them are tethered over USB and therefore have to be near the router. Using Wi-Fi removes that location requirement and makes it a little easier to get at your stored content from any device on the same network.
