Supermarket giant Sainsbury's officially opened its new flagship store located within the Silkstream development in West Hendon, London on 20 November 2024.

The retailer recently outlined plans to open 20 new supermarkets over the next 18 months, with Hendon among the key locations.

The 43,000ft² store is a significant step in the area's joint regeneration project with St George of the Berkeley Group, aiming to deliver a low-carbon, nature-rich neighbourhood featuring 1,300 new homes.

The Hendon supermarket showcases Sainsbury’s latest design and includes an ultra-rapid EV charging service, Smart Charge, with undercover parking for 250 vehicles and 10 Smart Charge bays.

Staff from the previous Hendon location have transitioned to the new store at 2 Henshaw Parade.

Sainsbury’s group property, procurement and EV ventures director Patrick Dunne said: “Our partnership with St George and Berkeley Group at Silkstream has proved to be a resounding success and we’re excited that customers and residents alike can now start to enjoy the benefits. Sainsbury’s has been proudly serving the community in Hendon for over thirty years and we’re delighted to be able to celebrate these two fantastic milestones in Hendon this month.

“From our development partners to our brilliant store team and everyone in the local community, I’d like to express my thanks for all the incredible support we’ve received for this project so far. We’re really looking forward to hearing what customers think of their brand new supermarket and we look forward to seeing Silkstream continue to grow and flourish in the coming years.”

In November 2024, Sainsbury’s revealed plans to introduce the Aldi Price Match offer in its Local convenience stores – a first in the UK grocery sector.
