Fugro has secured a contract from Ørsted to conduct a 12-month floating lidar measurement campaign, a crucial step for the Gippsland offshore wind farms located off the south coast of Gippsland, Victoria, in Australia.

This campaign will utilise Fugro's advanced SEAWATCH Wind Lidar Buoy to gather essential wind, wave, current and meteorological data to assess the feasibility of Ørsted's wind farm projects in the region.

Ørsted Australia market development head Albert Quan said: “This is a key step in getting our Gippsland project development well and truly under way.

“By developing a deep understanding of the metocean conditions, we will be able to design a world-class project to maximise the amount of green energy and value delivered for Victoria.”

The metocean data collected by the buoy will be transmitted in real time, providing Ørsted with early insights into site conditions. This will be complemented by monthly reports.

Fugro's local operations will spearhead the delivery of this comprehensive solution, which encompasses equipment supply, installation, operations and maintenance.

The SEAWATCH Wind Lidar Buoy is known for capturing highly accurate measurements of wind speed and direction up to 300m above sea level.

This system has achieved a Stage 3 rating, in accordance with the Carbon Trust road map for the commercial acceptance of floating lidar technology, confirming its reliability for providing wind speed data that informs investment decisions in offshore wind farm development.

Fugro Australia service line manager, Metocean, Pacific Simon Foster said: “We are excited to partner with Ørsted on this project.

“The Ørsted vision is a world that runs entirely on green energy; this aligns perfectly with Fugro’s purpose to create a safe and liveable world.

“Our extensive track record in collecting metocean data across Australia and globally ensures that we are well-equipped to contribute valuable insights to this project.”

In May last year, Ørsted secured a 20-year contract with the Danish Energy Agency for its carbon capture and storage project, the Ørsted Kalundborg Hub.
