Terry Iandiorio
Terrell Terry Iandiorio, a 46-year-old litigation and government enforcement counsel at Ropes & Gray in Boston, drowned in a rip current last week in Nantucket, a popular island vacation spot off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
According to local news reports, a lifeguard found Iandiorio face down in the rough waters off Nobadeer Beach around noon on Aug. 16. The beach was closed to swimmers at the time due to a high surf caused by Hurricane Gert. Rescuers pulled more than 25 people from the water and were looking for a child in distress when they reportedly found an unresponsive Iandiorio.
Iandiorio, who was honored last year for his pro bono work, was remembered by his family as an outstanding father to his two children, a committed husband, a caring brother and son, and a loving friend to all the people whose lives he touched so deeply every day, said a statement provided to The Boston Globe.
Brady Iandiorio, general counsel at building materials supplier Environmental StoneWorks near Denver, thanked the lifeguards on duty and the first responders that came to the aid of his late brother. We love Terry very much and he will be tremendously missed, Brady Iandiorio said.
Joshua Levy, a partner at Ropes & Gray in Boston and co-chair of the firm's government enforcement practice, said in a statement of his own that Iandiorio's kindness, tenacity and thoughtfulness made him the consummate professional, an outstanding enforcement attorney and a wonderful colleague.
Levy noted that Ropes & Gray's lawyers and clients respected the contributions that Iandiorio made to the firm, where he worked for more than a decade, including handling the firm's pro bono partnership with DoHouse Health, a community health care center in Dorchester, Massachusetts.
Terry provided an immeasurable impact on the lives of people in need of legal services at critical junctures in their lives, Levy said. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends at this tremendously difficult period.
Iandiorio's father, Joseph Iandiorio, once worked at Ropes & Gray predecessor Fish & Neavebefore becoming a founding partner of Waltham, Massachusetts-based intellectual property boutique Iandiorio Teska & Coleman.
An obituary posted online identified Iandiorio as a former teacher at Belmont High School in the western Boston suburb of the same name. Iandiorio's family has set up a memorial fund in his memory.
