Retail news and initial jobless claims are the main items on today's agenda.
Companies including Costco and L Brands will announce monthly same-store sales throughout the morning, and discount retailer Family Dollar reports quarterly earnings. Insurance firm Progressive is the other member of the S&P 500 scheduled to issue quarterly results.
Weekly jobless claims come out at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists forecast a reading of 311,000, down from 315,000 in the previous period. Natural-gas inventories follow two hours later.
There are no important economic numbers slated for Friday morning, but Wells Fargo reports quarterly results. Other major financials follow next week, including Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, JP Morgan, and Bank of America.
