Health technology company Resmed has acquired the software-enabled independent diagnostic testing facility VirtuOx, aiming to bolster its position in supporting patients earlier in their healthcare journey and simplifying care delivery for providers and homecare companies.

VirtuOx offers services for respiratory, cardiac and sleep conditions. Its virtual testing platform is designed to minimise diagnostic barriers by delivering quick services.

This is particularly significant for conditions like sleep-disordered breathing, which are often underdiagnosed.

For individuals suspected of obstructive sleep apnoea, VirtuOx provides a digital-first experience that can be crucial in ensuring they adhere to testing and treatment protocols.

The acquisition is set to enhance Resmed's ability to collaborate with healthcare providers to improve the diagnostic process and address blocks.

It also aims to broaden the partnership with home medical equipment providers, enabling accelerated support for individuals commencing treatment.

Additionally, Resmed noted that it will be equipped to offer healthcare providers integrated tools that enhance care coordination and engagement of patients.

According to the company, the growing demand for home-based care, triggered by increased awareness and digital innovation, is further supported by this acquisition.

It presents new opportunities for Resmed to venture into areas such as insomnia and strengthens its connections with physicians, home medical equipment providers and sleep laboratories.

Resmed chief product officer Justin Leong said: “By integrating VirtuOx’s diagnostic capabilities into our ecosystem, we can help accelerate the time between evaluation and treatment, reduce drop-off, and help more people access the life-changing benefits of therapy for sleep apnoea and related conditions.”

After the transaction, VirtuOx will continue to function as a wholly owned subsidiary of Resmed, serving individuals and partners under its current brand in the near term.

The leadership team at the company will continue to guide its innovation and growth strategy.

Resmed noted that the financial details of the acquisition have not been disclosed, as it is not material to the company’s overall financial outcomes.

VirtuOx offers technology solutions that enable in-home and remote testing services for various health conditions across the US.

This acquisition follows Resmed's July 2023 purchase of Somnoware, a US-based sleep and respiratory care diagnostics software provider, for an undisclosed sum.
