Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton faced off in their first presidential debate of the general election season on Monday night. The two candidates entered the debate with Trump having recovered some lost ground in the polls following a rough stretch at the end of the summer; national surveys increasingly show the race to be a dead heat, and polls in key swing states are also tightening.
Trump was looking to convince voters still on the fence that he has the temperament and knowledge to be President. Clinton aimed to disqualify Trump in front of a massive national televised audience and also hoped to assuage voters’ concerns about her own trustworthiness.
