We've lost count of how many times insiders have accumulated shares in a company that goes on to improve markedly. The flip side of that is that there are more than a few examples of insiders dumping stock prior to a period of weak performance. So before you buy or sell Cipla Limited (NSE:CIPLA), you may well want to know whether insiders have been buying or selling.
Do Insider Transactions Matter?
Most investors know that it is quite permissible for company leaders, such as directors of the board, to buy and sell stock in the company. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.
We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But it is perfectly logical to keep tabs on what insiders are doing. As Peter Lynch said, 'insiders might sell their shares for any number of reasons, but they buy them for only one: they think the price will rise.'

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Cipla
The insider, Geena Malhotra, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for ₹19m worth of shares at a price of ₹538 each. So we know that an insider sold shares at around the present share price of ₹475. While we don't usually like to see insider selling, it's more concerning if the sales take place at a lower price. Given that the sale took place at around current prices, it makes us a little cautious but is hardly a major concern.
We note that in the last year insiders divested 81996 shares for a total of ₹44m. Insiders in Cipla didn't buy any shares in the last year. Does Cipla Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. I reckon it's a good sign if insiders own a significant number of shares in the company. It's great to see that Cipla insiders own 36% of the company, worth about ₹138b. I like to see this level of insider ownership, because it increases the chances that management are thinking about the best interests of shareholders.
