Many Howmet Aerospace Inc. (NYSE:HWM) insiders ditched their stock over the past year, which may be of interest to the company's shareholders. When analyzing insider transactions, it is usually more valuable to know whether insiders are buying versus knowing if they are selling, as the latter sends an ambiguous message. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.
Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, logic dictates you should pay some attention to whether insiders are buying or selling shares.
Howmet Aerospace Insider Transactions Over The Last Year
Over the last year, we can see that the biggest insider sale was by the Executive VP & CFO, Kenneth Giacobbe, for US$15m worth of shares, at about US$96.58 per share. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (US$128). When an insider sells below the current price, it suggests that they considered that lower price to be fair. That makes us wonder what they think of the (higher) recent valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. It is worth noting that this sale was only 50% of Kenneth Giacobbe's holding.

Does Howmet Aerospace Boast High Insider Ownership?
For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Howmet Aerospace insiders own 1.1% of the company, currently worth about US$529m based on the recent share price. Most shareholders would be happy to see this sort of insider ownership, since it suggests that management incentives are well aligned with other shareholders.
