Possible Bearish Signals With Fiserv Insiders Disposing Stock

In This Article:

Over the past year, many Fiserv, Inc. (NYSE:FI) insiders sold a significant stake in the company which may have piqued investors' interest. When evaluating insider transactions, knowing whether insiders are buying is usually more beneficial than knowing whether they are selling, as the latter can be open to many interpretations. However, when multiple insiders sell stock over a specific duration, shareholders should take notice as that could possibly be a red flag.

Although we don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether.

Fiserv Insider Transactions Over The Last Year

In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Lead Independent Director, Doyle Simons, sold US$8.1m worth of shares at a price of US$202 per share. So it's clear an insider wanted to take some cash off the table, even below the current price of US$209. As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. Please do note, however, that sellers may have a variety of reasons for selling, so we don't know for sure what they think of the stock price. This single sale was 60% of Doyle Simons's stake.

Insiders At Fiserv Have Sold Stock Recently

Insider Ownership Of Fiserv

I like to look at how many shares insiders own in a company, to help inform my view of how aligned they are with insiders. A high insider ownership often makes company leadership more mindful of shareholder interests. It's great to see that Fiserv insiders own 0.6% of the company, worth about US$721m. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
