For example, the headlights resemble the electric Taycan and electric Macan. The rear has a similar silhouette to the 911 along with a vertical brake light, a design hallmark of the sports car.
The 718 Cayman is Porsche’s No. 4 seller in the U.S. behind the Macan, Cayenne and 911. U.S. sales rose 26 percent to 5,698 in 2024.
Automobilwoche, a sibling publication of Automotive News, reported in December that slowing EV adoption in Europe and the U.S., and plummeting sales in China, are forcing Porsche to reassess plans to generate 80 percent of sales from EVs by 2030.
Porsche is struggling to electrify the 718 Boxster and 718 Cayman, the report also said, noting the program is behind schedule because of issues with the battery.
The automaker is finding it difficult to match the driving characteristics of its famed sport cars, notably the move to a battery powertrain from a midengine combustion layout, the report said.
The 718 family’s internal combustion-driven models were scheduled to be phased out in summer 2025 and replaced by electric versions of the sports cars, according to the Automotive News Future Product Pipeline. That target is in doubt, according to Automobilwoche.
