Announced Friday, PepsiCo Inc (PEP) has plans to expand its partnership with at-home soda machine maker SodaStream International Ltd (SODA) to offer “caps” filled with Pepsi, Pepsi Wildcherry, and Sierra Mist to flavor water carbonated my the soda machines.
Consumers can buy the caps on SodaStream’s website; 4-packs are available for $3.49. They can also be bought at approximately 50 Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY) retail stores. Each cap will produce about half a liter of soda, and will contain roughly half as many calories as regular soda.
The new expansion comes after an original 10-week trial announced last October, when SodaStream began limited testing in Florida of PepsiCo brands.
One of PepsiCo’s biggest rivals, CocaCola Enterprises (CCE), is pursuing a similar venture with Keurig Green Mountain (GMCR). Together, they are producing a counter-top cold drink machine, dubbed Keurig Kold, available for purchase this fall; Dr. Pepper Snapple Group (DPS) drinks will be featured in addition to CocaCola options.
In a statement, PepsiCo said it ``is exploring multiple technologies in this area, and SodaStream is one of several companies we’re talking to about potential ideas.’’
In late afternoon trading, PepsiCo $0.38, or 0.42%, $91.44; the company holds a #3 (Hold) on the Zacks Rank. SodaStream stock has soared throughout the day, currently resting at $15.91, up $1.09, or 7.36%. The soda machine maker is a #5 (Strong Sell) on the Zacks Rank.
