Payrolls are main item on calendar

Non-farm payrolls are the main event on today's economic calendar.

The Labor Department will announce the numbers at 8:30 a.m. ET. Economists anticipate that 210,000 jobs were added in September, up from 142,000 in August. The unemployment rate is expected to remain steady at 6.1 percent.

The Institute for Supply Management's service-sector index, which follows at 10 a.m. ET, is forecast to dip to 58.9 from 59.6 the previous month.

The weekend brings Brazilian elections, which could affect emerging markets next week. The calendar, nonetheless, remains quiet for the next several sessions.

Monday is devoid of any significant items. The only event of potential interest is the Australian central bank's interest rate decision, which could shed some light on commodities and Chinese demand.

Tuesday brings German industrial production early and Chinese manufacturing data late. Yum Brands also reports earnings in the afternoon.

Wednesday is busier, with weekly mortgage applications and crude-oil data, along with minutes from the last Federal Reserve meeting in the afternoon. Costco and Monsanto announce results early, while Alcoa follows after the closing bell.

Thursday features monthly same-store sales from select retailers, along with jobless claims, natural-gas inventories, and Chinese trade data in the evening. PepsiCo is the only noteworthy company scheduled to report earnings.

Friday brings quarterly results from Infosys, Fastenal, and Progressive.
