J.B. Hunt’s major competitors

In this part of the series, we’ll discuss J.B. Hunt’s (JBHT) major competitors.

JBHT’s major competitors in the trucking industry are Old Dominion Freight Line (ODFL), Swift Transportation Company (SWFT), and Landstar System (LSTR). These companies are part of the the iShares Transportation Average ETF (IYT). We’ll discuss these companies in more detail below.

Old Dominic Freight Line

ODFL was founded in 1934. It’s a global transportation carrier company. It provides regional, inter-regional, and national LTL (less-than-truckload) services and value-added logistics services. ODFL ships freight, moves cargo, manages truck logistics, and makes deliveries.

Swift Transportation Company

SWFT is a transportation services company. It’s a truckload carrier in North America. It was founded in 2010. SWFT operates in four segments:

  1. Truckload

  2. Dedicated

  3. Central Refrigerated

  4. Intermodal

The company’s other non-reportable segments include SWFT’s freight brokerage and logistics management services, Interstate Equipment Leasing LLC, insurance, and shops.

Landstar Systems

LSTR was incorporated in 1991. It provides integrated transportation management solutions to its customers across multiple transportation modes. LSTR provides services throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, and other countries around the world. It delivers its services through a network of independent commission sales agents and third-party capacity providers. They’re linked together by a series of information technology systems.

Comparative analysis

As shown in the above table, JBHT has the highest market cap among its competitors. It also the highest EPS (earnings per share). Historically, JBHT outperformed the market in the bull and bear phases. As a result, when the economy recovers, the company is expected to perform better than its competitors.
