‘Black Panther’ Earnings: $1.3B
Marvel’s Afro-futurist superhero movie killed it at the box office. “Black Panther” earned a domestic gross of just over $700 million, but its worldwide performance netted Marvel a total box office gross of $1.3 billion. Plus, the movie made a cool $202 million during its opening weekend. It is the highest-grossing film on this list, and it beat out the worldwide performance of best picture winner “Green Book” by over a billion.
Although the film did not win an Oscar for best picture, the fact that a comic-based movie garnered such recognition — it’s the first superhero film to be nominated for best picture — was seen as a milestone for many.
