For all the hoopla leading up to it, New Year’s Day is generally a pretty sedate holiday. People are still recovering financially from the big December holidays and, having stayed up late the night before (perhaps partying a bit too hard), there’s not a real demand to gather.
There is, after all, a reason so many people spend the day on the couch watching college bowl games.
But if you’re a competitive shopper who wants to get a jump on the final year-end clearance markdowns, or just need to get away from the family, you’ve got a number of options. (Keep in mind, though, that it’s a federal holiday, which will impact some other services.)
Store hours will almost certainly vary, so it's a good idea to call first to confirm your local location is open.

Are banks open on New Year’s Day?
They’re not. New Year’s Day is a federal holiday, meaning bank branches will be closed. You can, however, still use ATM machines to get cash or put money into your account.
Will there be any mail delivery on New Year’s Day?
Nope. The U.S. Postal Service does not operate on New Year's Day, and UPS and FedEx will both suspend deliveries that day as well.
Is the stock market open on New Year’s Day?
Well, it’s Saturday, so no. That’s not unusual. However, the New York Stock Exchange, Nasdaq, and bond markets will all be open on Monday, which is, in a way. (They won’t observe a New Year’s holiday this year.)
Are government offices open on New Year’s Day?
City, county, state, and federal offices are all closed, as they generally are on Saturday.
