Since their 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI, the New York Giants have had trouble just making it back to the playoffs. Quarterback Eli Manning and the Giants always seem to struggle in the regular season yet come alive in the playoffs. Since 2007 the Giants have only made the playoffs three times with two of those three trips ending in Super Bowl victories in 2007 and 2011. Unfortunately for the Giants, they have to make the playoffs before they can go on their incredible Super Bowl runs, and therein is the predicament.

The Giants offense struggled greatly in 2013. Manning had a horrible year under center throwing only 18 touchdowns with an NFL-leading, career-high 27 interceptions. After such a disappointing season in New York, the personnel around Manning received a drastic overhaul. The Giants brought in Ben McAdoo as the new Offensive Coordinator, added more veteran leadership to the offensive line, and signed new running backs and receivers to help the Manning offense. The pressure is also building on Manning to continue pumping out championships. Manning's large contract expires at the end of the 2015 NFL season; and if the Giants continue to miss the playoffs, Manning and his Super Bowl rings may be kicked to the curb in favor of a younger franchise quarterback—kind of the same situation his brother Peyton Manning went when he was cut by the Indianapolis Colts. But, Manning has always come alive in the 4th quarter, so he should have no problem finishing strong and earning a new contract.

The Giants defense was relatively quiet last season, but they look ready to help out the offense to a greater degree in 2014. The Giants may have lost defensive end Justin Tuck, but during the offseason they acquired Robert Ayers and Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. These two will be joining Jason Pierre-Paul, Prince Amukamara, and Antrel Rolle on defense to create a potentially intimidating scenario for opponents. Ayers has emerged as a terrific run stopper; Pierre-Paul is coming back healthy and ready for a career season in sacks; and the trio of Rodgers-Cromartie, Amukamara, and Rolle should cause problems for any quarterback in the league. The Giants will not have the best defense in the NFL, but they will certainly be significantly improved from last year.
