LAS VEGAS (KLAS) — NV Energy customers could face a rate increase of 9 percent.
According to NV Energy officials, the increase would require approval from the Public Utilities Commission of Nevada and is due to 2024’s heat wave.
“We had two weeks of 110, 115 days. That’s record-breaking heat,” said Meghin Delaney, spokesperson for NV Energy. “We were able to meet that need for our customers and to make sure everyone had energy because we had made investments.”
Delaney said a forthcoming company proposal may help alleviate the pressure on individuals who struggle to pay their power bills.
“We are proposing that customers who meet certain income requirements… won’t have to pay the basic service charge on their bill,” said Delaney, adding that cutting the service charge could save customers $20 per month. Additionally, Delaney said the company is proposing a “demand charge.”
“The demand charge will help us recover the cost for those spikes in energy,” said Delaney. “We’re really encouraging customers to keep their energy use level throughout the day.”
Delaney provided basic tips for saving power, including avoiding running large appliances like laundry machines and dishwashers simultaneously.
“Run one after the other, and you keep that level; that’s going to help you keep your demand charge low,” said Delaney.
A third proposal would change how solar power is billed, applying to new rooftop solar customers. Under that proposal, Delaney said the credit solar customers receive would change from monthly to per 15-minute.
The Public Utilities Commission of Nevada will decide on the 9 percent rate increase in September. However, customers will not see the changes in their bills until at least October.
