This year’s New York International Auto Show (NYIAS) wasn’t as busy and loud as shows in the past, but there was a lot going on, as the Big Apple stop on the auto show circuit has been growing in size, and importance.

For my colleague and 2 Dudes co-host Rick Newman and me, it was another show in the books where SUVs were the main draw. Truck love in NYC is nothing new, as last year it was the pickups that were all the rage, but with new models out last year for Ford (updated at least), GM (GM), and Ram (FCAU), the half-ton battlefield for 2019 was subdued.

Still, there was one pickup at the show that drew a fair amount of attention.

We’re talking about Rivian. The Plymouth, Michigan–based electric vehicle-maker was in stealth mode for a few years, but it busted out at the LA auto show late last year in style. Rivan made it’s next big stop at this year’s New York show, and the vehicles on display were quite impressive. Dubbing themselves the maker of “the world’s first Electric Adventure Vehicles,” Rivian has a futuristic pickup concept called the R1T, as well as a Range Rover-esque SUV dubbed the R1S. Both vehicles have a 400-mile range and will hit 0-60 mph in 3 seconds, according to Rivian.

What struck Rick and me the most about the R1T was the amount storage — rear truck bed, huge ‘frunk’ in the hood, and an ingenious slot in the rear of the cab and ahead of the bed wide enough to store a surfboard. This is all due to the space and compactness an electric drivetrain affords, in addition to a low center of gravity that the battery pack in the floor provides.

Other highlights for Rick included the new Toyota (TM) Yaris (yes, that isn’t a typo), and the debut of the Lincoln (F) Corsair crossover, that we both agreed looked impressive. I also was in an SUV/crossover state of mind, noting the all-new Subaru Outback that premiered at the show was the star of the show; Subaru seemingly improving the stalwart Outback in a number of ways.

And although not new for New York, Mazda brought its redesigned 3 sedan and hatchback, which looked the business. The exterior styling was sleek and smart, and interior design was luxury-car level in quality, with a driving position that only Mazda seems to get right every time. If you’re willing to pay more, Porsche (VOW.DE) makes some mighty fine vehicles too, and the new 911 Speedster with Heritage package is a real looker.
