South Korea’s Naver Corp. has teamed up with WeChat Pay to expand its mobile payment and digital wallet Naver Pay across China, using QR codes, reported Korea Economic Daily Global.
With this move, Naver is said to become the first South Korean company to offer QR code-based payment and online transaction services with WeChat Pay, referred to as Weixin Pay, in China.
WeChat Pay, which is integrated into the WeChat app, has over 1.13 billion active users.
Naver Pay has been operational in China since September 2023, providing QR payment services through UnionPay and Alipay Plus.
To make a payment, users should press the QR payment camera button at the bottom centre of the Naver Pay app, scan the WeChat Pay QR code, input the payment amount, and tap the Pay button.
The payment is then deducted from the user's Naver Pay points or balance.
Additionally, users have the option to view the estimated payment amount in Korean won before confirming the transaction.
If the payment exceeds the available balance, Naver Pay will automatically top up the balance in increments of 10,000 won to facilitate the transaction.
Naver has also confirmed that the "10% discount without conditions" offer, currently available with UnionPay until next March, will be extended to WeChat Pay QR payments.
Additional incentives, such as stamp rewards, will be accessible to users when utilising the Naver Pay QR payment service with WeChat Pay.
Naver Pay Business & Pay Infrastructure head Lee Mi-young said: “QR payments are the most common payment method in China. We hope that Korean travellers enjoy a convenient trip to China using Naver Pay. We will continue to expand our services in partnerships with global mobile platform operators.”
"Naver Pay, WeChat Pay collaborate on mobile payments " was originally created and published by Electronic Payments International, a GlobalData owned brand.
