National Fuel increasing cost of natural gas charge

Starting today, it will cost more to heat a home with natural gas, according to National Fuel Gas Distribution Corp.

The natural gas utility has submitted to the Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission its quarterly adjustment to gas supply charges.

Effective today, the monthly bill of a typical residential customer with an annual use of 99,300 cubic feet of gas will rise by $2.73, from $72.12 to $74.85.

The rate adjustment is primarily due to increased market prices for natural gas, raising the cost of natural gas supplies that National Fuel purchases for customers, the company said.

Gas supply costs are passed along to customers on a dollar-for-dollar basis, with no mark-up or profit to National Fuel.

Pennsylvania utility companies are permitted to update gas supply charges on a quarterly basis to reflect changes in the market price of natural gas. National Fuel’s next opportunity to adjust gas supply charges will be Feb. 1, 2025.

National Fuel’s price-to-compare gascommoditycharge also increases to $0.40159 per 100 cubic feet (ccf).

This reference point, detailed on the National Fuel bill under gas supply charges, is important for customers who shop for an alternate gas supplier.

National Fuel reminds customers LIHEAP, the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, opens Monday.
