How Much Are Avast Plc (LON:AVST) Insiders Taking Off The Table?

We often see insiders buying up shares in companies that perform well over the long term. Unfortunately, there are also plenty of examples of share prices declining precipitously after insiders have sold shares. So we'll take a look at whether insiders have been buying or selling shares in Avast Plc (LON:AVST).

What Is Insider Selling?

It's quite normal to see company insiders, such as board members, trading in company stock, from time to time. However, such insiders must disclose their trading activities, and not trade on inside information.

We don't think shareholders should simply follow insider transactions. But equally, we would consider it foolish to ignore insider transactions altogether. For example, a Harvard University study found that 'insider purchases earn abnormal returns of more than 6% per year.

The Last 12 Months Of Insider Transactions At Avast

The Independent Non-Executive Director, Erwin Gunst, made the biggest insider sale in the last 12 months. That single transaction was for UK£3.6m worth of shares at a price of UK£3.67 each. That means that an insider was selling shares at slightly below the current price (UK£3.81). As a general rule we consider it to be discouraging when insiders are selling below the current price, because it suggests they were happy with a lower valuation. However, while insider selling is sometimes discouraging, it's only a weak signal. This single sale was just 49% of Erwin Gunst's stake. Erwin Gunst was the only individual insider to sell shares in the last twelve months.

Insider Ownership of Avast

For a common shareholder, it is worth checking how many shares are held by company insiders. Usually, the higher the insider ownership, the more likely it is that insiders will be incentivised to build the company for the long term. Avast insiders own 3.9% of the company, currently worth about UK£147m based on the recent share price. This kind of significant ownership by insiders does generally increase the chance that the company is run in the interest of all shareholders.
