I am not a doctor but I play one on TV. Recently, Sanjay Gupta, a well-known medical personality and CNN medical reporter was asked on camera if he had ever smoked marijuana. In a prelude to his latest medical report, he had to say yes since he had tried it in college. As a medical practitioner, he knew the best way to move forward was to carefully lead through more research while encouraging medical marijuana usage.
Marijuana has had a long history in the world and now it at the forefront of the news again - a flashback to the 1960s. Some believe it is good for people while others state the reverse. The real challenge is that no-one knows for sure! Today, there are more than 1500 new medications available or now in testing about which we are also unsure. As much as modern medicine does not want to be pitted against 5000 years of Chinese medicine or other holistic approaches, consumers, pharmacists and scientists are all nervous for the state of politics and the new categorization of marijuana as a natural gateway to healing pain and curing disease. The legal aspect is looming large and politics does indeed make for strange bedfellows.
