Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL), a shipping company based in Japan, and The Kansai Electric Power Company (KEPCO) have entered into a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to undertake a joint study on a liquefied hydrogen carrier.
The partnership between MOL and KEPCO aims to investigate the specifics of transporting liquefied hydrogen by sea. Liquefied hydrogen remains a key component in developing a hydrogen fuel supply chain.
Under the terms of the MoU, both entities will carry out a comprehensive study to determine the most suitable vessels and operational methods for the liquefied hydrogen supply chain. They will also focus on ensuring the safety of such vessels.
The study will include an analysis of international laws and regulations that govern the marine transport of liquefied hydrogen.
Their joint efforts are directed towards establishing a viable hydrogen supply chain and contributing to the achievement of a zero-carbon society.
The study will encompass various aspects, including the arrangement and examination of technical and contractual relationships related to vessels, and the study of issues such as permits and approvals necessary for establishing the supply chain.
It will also involve an analysis of cargo handling operations, ship-to-shore compatibility, and discussions with ship classification societies and regulatory authorities.
An economic analysis of the liquefied hydrogen supply chain, specifically for liquid hydrogen carriers, is also a key area of focus under the partnership.
In September last year, MOL collaborated with PETRONAS CCS Ventures and MISC Berhad to develop liquefied carbon dioxide (LCO₂) carriers.
The collaboration focused on advancing and commercialising technology for carbon capture and storage (CCS) projects.
