At Yusuf's Cuisine, a handwritten sign on the front door reads "temporarily closed."
The Middle Eastern restaurant − situated at 841 W. Main St. in Peoria − opened its doors for dine-in on May 1. Mother-son team Samira Zeid and Mohammed Zeid said their goal was to bring traditional Palestinian dishes to Peoria.
"You find the more chicken shawarma, beef shawarma, hummus, falafel, baba ghanoush (in Peoria)," Mohammed Zeid said after opening. "But there's so much more to Middle Eastern food. And that’s not tapped into here."
The menu lists unique staples such as Knafeh, Yusuf's Bowl and Imsakhan Pizza, as well as more common Middle Eastern dishes such as gyros and falafels. The business also offers catering.
No reason for the closure or expected reopening date was listed on the sign, and so far, attempts to reach the restaurant by phone and email have gone unanswered. The business's website asks customers to "check back with us for updates."
