Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume is very light at just 4 million so far on this summer Friday ahead of a holiday week, with little contribution from the large indexes and ETFs, optionMONSTER data systems show.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) leads the way as usual with 500,000 contracts as puts eclipse calls by 2 to 1. Following is the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) at 232,000 options, with puts outpacing calls by more than 2 to 1. Weekly options make up half of that action.

The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) has seen 143,000 contracts turn over, with 86,000 puts. The PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) has 88,000 options moving, led by 52,000 puts. The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) also has volume of 88,000, dominated by 76,000 calls.

The SPDR Gold Fund (GLD) has 62,000 contracts changing hands as calls outnumber puts by 2 to 1.
