Midday index, ETF option volumes

Total option volume is quite light today as just 4.1 million options have traded so far, with little action in the big indexes and ETFs, according to optionMONSTER data systems.

The SPDR S&P 500 Fund (:SPY) has just 384,000 options traded, with puts slightly outpacing calls. The iShares Russell 2000 Fund (IWM) is the next ETF, though it is No. 5 on the total volume list with just 102,000 options and a put/call ratio of more than 2 to 1. Just behind are the PowerShares QQQ Trust (:QQQ) at 98,000 contracts, with 53,000 puts.

The CBOE Volatility Index (:VIX) has 88,000 options changing hands, with 51,000 calls. Close behind is the S&P 500 Index (:SPX) with 86,000 contracts, led by 66,000 puts.

The SPDR Financial Fund (XLF) has 82,000 options turning over, dominated by 73,000 puts. And the iPath S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures Note (VXX) has seen 80,000 options trade, with 50,000 calls.
