Michael Saylor’s treasury bid pays off big for MicroStrategy

In This Article:

MicroStrategy (MSTR), rebranded to Strategy, has generated a Bitcoin gain of $5.1 billion year-to-date (YTD) via its treasury operations, founder and executive chairman Michael Saylor claimed on X on Apr. 26.

The firm's BTC quarter-to-date (QTD) — since Apr. 1, 2025 — gain stood at $492 million.

While its BTC YTD — since Jan. 1, 2025 — yield is 12%, its BTC yield since 2024 is 74%. However, its BTC QTD yield is 1%.

The steep decline in BTC yield during the current quarter of 2025 reflects the pressure of the ongoing tariff war on the cryptocurrency's performance.

Saylor himself is a strong Bitcoin advocate and has predicted that the cryptocurrency will hit the bullish price of $13 million in 20 years.

Referring to its recent price action, Saylor recently remarked on X that traders could still buy BTC "for less than $0.1 million." As per Kraken's price feed, Bitcoin was trading at $94,346.08 at press time.

The cryptocurrency has successfully recovered above the "Liberation Day" level of $87,000 when President Donald Trump escalated the tariff war on Apr. 2. Yet, it is still 13% lower than the record high of $108,786 that it hit on Jan. 20.

Leaders in Bitcoin treasuries

MicroStrategy, which began acquiring Bitcoin in August 2020, is the largest corporate holder of Bitcoin in the world. The firm holds 538,000 BTC worth $50.7 billion on its balance sheet as of now.

The next two largest Bitcoin holders are the crypto mining companies MARA Holdings and Riot Platforms, which own 47,600 BTC and 19,223 BTC respectively.

There is a new challenger too. Twenty One, a newly launched company, is set to go public with 42,000 BTC in its holdings. It is a joint venture of a consortium of finance giants, such as Cantor Fitzgerald and SoftBank Group.

Note that Howard Lutnick served as the Cantor Fitzgerald CEO during 1991–2025 and chairperson during 1996–2025 before stepping down when Trump confirmed him as the Commerce Secretary. His son, Brandon, soon took over as the chairperson.
