Miami's Lawson Center Courthouse Reopening Friday

The Lawson E. Thomas Courthouse Center will reopen Friday for regular business in the family and domestic violence divisions after flooding closed the downtown Miami building.

The probate division, which is on the 11th floor, will reopen Monday, but its staff was asked to return to work Friday to prepare for the reopening. The parking garage also was set to reopen Friday in the 30-floor building.

The 11th floor was the only one with courtrooms that sustained damage, with water pulling down a hallway ceiling.

The courthouse was evacuated late Tuesday after a rubber clamp wore out on a pipe between the 11th and 12th floors that carries rainwater from the roof to the city's drainage system during an intense downpour. Water pooled on the 11th floor and in the lobby, where ceilings were also affected.

Miami-Dade Circuit Court was posting updates on its website at www.jud11.flcourts.org.
