VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--(Marketwired - Feb 6, 2015) - The Canadian based Save Your Skin Foundation, a non-profit organization focusing on education and awareness for skin cancer, has launched a new Diagnosis to Survivorship Webinar Series. The webinar series is the first of its kind, including topics relevant to the new landscape of melanoma and survivorship.
As little as ten years ago few resources and even fewer treatment options were available. Today the landscape of skin cancer is changing drastically and the Save Your Skin Foundation is committed to walking the journey hand in hand with those already diagnosed, and with those who will be diagnosed.
Skin Cancer is the most common cancer in Canada today and combined (Melanoma and Non-Melanoma Skin Cancers- NMSC) will account for nearly the same number of new cancer cases in Canada as the four major Cancers (lung, breast, colorectal and prostate). And while cancer cases are decreasing, skin cancer incidence rates are increasing at an alarming rate. It is expected that by 2030 over 200,000 cases of non-melanoma skin cancers will be diagnosed and close to 10,000 melanoma skin cancers, the deadliest form of skin cancer in Canada.
This series explores the journey faced by the patient from initial diagnosis (what to expect) through to survivorship, providing specialist knowledge and understanding of the environment with emphasis on improving the patient's own cancer care and well-being.
The Diagnosis to Survivorship Webinar Series starts on Friday, February 13th, 2015 with Dr. Michael Smylie from the Cross Cancer Institute in Edmonton. Dr. Smylie, a pioneer in treating melanoma in Canada, will provide an outlook on what treatment options are available today. This webinar will be followed by the continuation of the informative and interactive discussions with specialists across the spectrum, including navigating the Canadian health system, what to ask in the first meeting with the oncologist, understanding of the cancer system in Quebec, and more.
