Nine New York Macy's stores will close their doors as part of a revitalization plan the company announced last year. The plan, which includes the closure of around 150 "underproductive" locations in three years, "is designed to return the company to sustainable, profitable sales growth," the retailer said in a press release Thursday.
Overall sales for Macy's declined 2.4% to $4.7 billion during the third quarter, which ended Nov. 2, 2024, USA TODAY reported. But sales at Macy’s First 50 locations, where the company is focusing its revitalization efforts, rose 1.9%, marking a third consecutive quarter of sales growth, the company said.
“Closing any store is never easy, but as part of our Bold New Chapter strategy, we are closing underproductive Macy’s stores to allow us to focus our resources and prioritize investments in our go–forward stores, where customers are already responding positively to better product offerings and elevated service,” says chairman and chief executive officer of Macy’s, Inc. Tony Spring.
