Local small businesses prepare for Black Friday and Small Business Saturday

Nov. 23—After getting stuffed like a Thanksgiving turkey, Pulaski Countians will prepare for the "fight night" that is Black Friday. Major department stores across the country will be offering deals to patrons, but local stores here have more than enough to satisfy your family's holiday needs.

Husband and wife duo Brooke and Michael Keck co-own and operate Paul's Discount which is known for its southern selection of gifts.

Paul's has a 20% discount on all items including clothes and hardware plus 25% off for fishing and 10% off for the wintertime favorite: guns and ammo.

"We have some blowout sails that I'm really excited for," said Brooke Keck. "Like these slippers typically cost $60, but we're actually able to do them on Black Friday for $17.99. So big, big savings."

A lot of these same deals are available for Small Business Saturday as well. For Cyber Monday, though, Paul's doesn't have a big presence in online shopping, but the Kecks still hope to offer some deals for in-store shoppers.

The Kecks have owned the store for a little more than a year, making this their second Black Friday in business.

"We definitely learned from last year that we want to make everything simple for everybody," explained Brooke Keck. "On our blowout deals, it's not going to just be in the pamphlet, they can find it in the store marked. So I've been working on that, so if they see a gun safe for instance that's like $900, I'm going to have the price right on it (rather than just in the pamphlet)."

Brooke Keck said that things have moved smoothly in the past "for the most part," so she's hoping Paul's can have an easy-going holiday shopping experience (if such a thing is even possible).

Brooke Keck added that holiday shopping in the weekend after Thanksgiving is a bit of a tradition for many Americans, and the store hopes to help people keep up those traditions.

The Mole Hole is downtown's central bar, candy store, and specialty store all rolled into one. Owner Tammy Lewis plans to offer a Black Friday Brunch. She will offer some Mimosas and Bloody Marys for buyers who'd like to take the edge off for the holidays.

"The first 20 people will also get a goody bag," said Lewis. "And there are plenty of offers to save throughout the day."

Another duo Brian and Julie Shepperd run Boujee on a Budget. They're offering $10 gift cards for every $100 sale.

"If they buy a sofa and that's $400, we give them $40," said Julie Shepperd.
