To become a better leader we need to become a better person.
And in order to transform into a better person we need to grow and evolve by living (experiencing life in as many different facets as possible), learning (from successes and especially from failures), and loving (others and ourself).
This can be achieved in many different ways. By observing, asking, listening, doing, failing, rehearsing, emulating, etc. There´s no right or wrong. As long as it fits you and that you feel comfortable and good about and with it.
