Lenawee County organizations planning to participate in National Intern Day activities

ADRIAN — A handful of Lenawee County businesses and organizations are planning to participate this week in National Intern Day activities scheduled for Thursday, July 27.

National Intern Day is a day that celebrates interns who are learning from and working with employers throughout the country.

It is a holiday created by WayUp, a United States-based job site and mobile app for college students and recent graduates, which held its first National Intern Day in 2017. The day is designed to create awareness of how internships are essential for acquiring valuable experience and exposure.

Since its origination in 2017, National Intern Day has been recognized annually on the last Thursday in July.

Locally, Lenawee County’s celebration of the day is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Thursday. It will begin at Hidden Lake Gardens in Tipton for a morning of networking, service learning and exploration, a news release from Siena Heights University said. SHU is one of the local organizations participating in National Intern Day.

The group then will travel to PlaneWave Instruments in Adrian for a picnic lunch followed by an afternoon of STEAM activities including a tour of PlaneWave and creative discovery with the Adrian Center for the Arts. STEAM stands for science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics.

“Organizers of the event have planned a celebration to honor and thank this special group of workers for the many ways they contribute to organizations and the community,” the release said. “In addition to honoring interns, the day will showcase the many reasons to stay and work in Lenawee County following graduation.”

Interns are often trusted with responsibilities such as filing documents, making calls or assisting someone who’s been in the field for a long time — essentially learning the ropes of a business.

In addition to Siena Heights University, Hidden Lake Gardens, PlaneWave and the Adrian Center for the Arts, the other participating county businesses and organizations include the Wacker Chemical Corp., Lenawee Now, Greater Lenawee Chamber of Commerce, Visit Lenawee and the Adrian Downtown Development Authority.
