Le Bon Macaron of Ann Arbor, Grand Rapids announces upcoming Holland location

HOLLAND — Early this week, word broke of a new business coming to downtown Holland.

Le Bon Macaron announced Monday, Sept. 19, on social media it will open its third location along the lakeshore, joining stores in Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor.

"Holland has been on our minds for quite awhile now, and we are happy to announce that we have finally found the perfect spot, the lease is signed and it's officially happening," the business wrote.

While the shop has yet to announce its exact location, vacancies on the portion of Eighth Street hinted at include the former Kitchen Zero at 64 W. Eighth St. and the former Threads on Eighth at 21 W. Eighth St. — plus vacancies on River Avenue in the former Making Waves at 211 S. River Ave. and the former Superior Sport Store at 202 S. River Ave.

Le Bon is owned by John and Wendy Kobus — who have a long history of business ownership in Michigan — along with their daughter, Kelly Toland.

"At first, it was my just mom and I," Toland said. "And then my dad joined and did all of the baking, and now my brother (John 'Johnny' Kobus) manages our baking facility in Grand Rapids and my sister (Chelsea Adriaansen) manages the Grand Rapids store. I manage the Ann Arbor store."

Menu items range from macarons to scones to coffee to sundaes and hand-crafted sodas. Macaron flavors include chocolate, coffee, raspberry, salted caramel, vanilla, blueberry, lemon, poppy, strawberry cheesecake, brownie batter and more.

"We have about 30 flavors available daily, but we have well over 100 flavors total," Toland said. "We change them throughout the season, so right now, we're in our fall collection."

Macarons are colorful, sweet, meringue-based confections typically made with egg whites, sugar and almond meal. They're not to be confused with macaroons, which are generally less colorful and made with coconut.

The family hopes to open the Holland storefront in early 2023.

"We've had customers coming into our Grand Rapids store for years, begging for us to come to Holland," Toland said. "We love downtown Holland. We think it's beautiful. A lot of the messages we've received from other business owners, their reaction was very sweet and reminded us this was the right community for us to expand in."
