Launch of International Development Week

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--(Marketwired - Feb 2, 2014) - Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada

The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of International Development and Minister for La Francophonie, today launched the annual International Development Week (IDW), held February 2-8, 2014. International Development Week features events all across Canada that highlight what Canadians and organizations are doing to alleviate poverty around the world. The theme for International Development Week is "We are making a difference".

"During my time as Minister of International Development, I have visited some of the developing countries where Canada works, and I have seen first-hand how our assistance saves lives, helps families and transforms communities," said Minister Paradis. "Be it in the Philippines, in Haiti, or in Senegal, it is a humbling experience to witness the strength of humanity and the drive to overcome, to grow and to build a better future. I was privileged to witness the direct results Canadian actions are having on women, children and entire families, around the world, and I have rarely been more proud to be Canadian."

Partner organizations, including regional and provincial councils for international cooperation, are organizing events throughout the country to increase awareness about international development and to show how Canadians from all walks of life, and especially youth, are helping make a difference by helping developing countries lift themselves out of poverty.
