Large Cap Indexes Report Losses on Monday

U.S. market indexes were mixed on Monday with large cap stocks reporting losses.

For the day, the Dow Jones Industrial Average closed at 21,629.72 for a loss of 8.02 points or 0.04%. The Standard & Poor's 500 closed at 2,459.14 for a loss of 0.13 points or 0.01%. The Nasdaq Composite closed at 6,314.43 for a gain of 1.97 points or 0.03%. The VIX Volatility Index was higher for the day at 9.82 with a gain of 0.31 points or 3.26%.


Monday's market movers

Stocks were mixed as investors awaited second-quarter earnings results which companies begin reporting this week. No market moving economic reports were released on Monday.

In the Dow Jones Industrial Average, the following stocks led gains and losses:

Gains

  • Microsoft (MSFT) 0.78%.

  • Home Depot (HD) 0.66%.



Losses

  • JPMorgan (JPM) -0.93%.

  • IBM (IBM) -0.80%.



In the broad market, utilities stocks led gains and health care stocks led losses. Technology stocks were higher for the day with the S&P 500 technology sector increasing 0.02%.

Small-cap stocks

In small-caps, the Russell 2000 Index closed at 1,431.60 for a gain of 2.79 points or 0.20%. The S&P 600 Small-Cap Index closed at 865.12 for a gain of 2.42 points or 0.28%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Growth TSM Index closed at 8,668.02 for a gain of 6.22 points or 0.07%. The Dow Jones Small-Cap Value TSM Index closed at 9,656.71 for a gain of 31.68 points or 0.33%.

Other notable indexes

Other notable index closes included the S&P 400 Mid-Cap Index at 1,768.15 for a gain of 2.83 points or 0.16%; the S&P 100 Index at 1,082.45 for a loss of 0.68 points or 0.06%; the Russell 3000 Index at 1,456.97 for a gain of 0.25 points or 0.02%; the Russell 1000 Index at 1,362.64 for a gain of 0.03 points or 0.01%; and the Dow Jones U.S. Select Dividend Index at 660.47 for a gain of 1.39 points or 0.21%.
