CORNELIUS, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A prominent Lake Norman brewery has filed for bankruptcy after claiming more than $1 million us debts.
D9 Brewing Company, known for its Hakuna Matata and Brown Sugar, Brown Cow beers, filed for Chapter 11 Bankruptcy March 29 in the Western District of North Carolina. The brewery has between $100,000 and $500,000 in assets but its debts are in the seven figures to at least 50 entities.
Blue Blaze Brewing closing its doors after 8-year run in Charlotte’s West End
The brewery opened in Cornelius in 2014 under owner Andrew Durstewitz, touting its scientific approach to beer. It experienced rapid growth in the late 2010s, expanding distribution along much of the east coast and opening locations in Hendersonville, uptown Charlotte and ultimately Newton.
The Newton facility is a partnership with other breweries known as Bevana/Community Venture Brewing. In uptown, the brewery on Brooklyn Village Avenue opened with a large concert space and beer garden, but struggled with a late 2020 launch and has since closed.
Among the debtors are the Mecklenburg County Tax Collector, Catawba County Tax Collector, N.C. Department of Revenue, plus fellow Bevana breweries like Salisbury’s New Sarum and Charlotte’s Resident Culture.
D9 is operated out of a Huntersville office.
Two other local breweries have shuttered recently. Blue Blaze in west Charlotte closed in early March, while Weathered Souls will have its final day in business on Saturday.
