French cosmetic company L'Oreal has unveiled a new research and innovation (R&I) centre in Clark, New Jersey, US.

L'Oreal has invested nearly $160m in the new 23,226sqm facility. It is the company’s largest research site outside of France. This US facility expands the company's global research network and will focus on developing products for its North American brands, such as Maybelline and CeraVe.

The site, first announced in September 2022, includes a 2,415sqm modular laboratory, a consumer testing facility, and an on-site mini factory for scaling final formulations before full-scale production.

It will employ more than 600 scientists, engineers, and researchers. Furthermore, the centre will partner with academic institutions, biotech firms, and startups to advance sustainable, inclusive, and personalised beauty solutions.

Barbara Lavernos, deputy CEO of L'Oreal Group, characterised the US market as an ‘ideal environment’ with a diverse consumer base and an industry-leading innovation ecosystem.

“This centre embodies L'Oreal's end-to-end innovation model, from upstream advanced research on breakthrough ingredients to the downstream development of formulas,” she added.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy said, "I am excited that L'Oreal has chosen to continue investing in the future of New Jersey and is creating jobs that will boost our state's economy.”

Headquartered in the French city of Clichy, L'Oreal has around 94,600 employees globally. Last year, in 2024, it announced new facilities in the Philippines, Vietnam, and South Korea.
